NRA & Las Vegas

The NRA is ready to deny that the latest gun tragedy in USA is due to the unique laws in USA regarding gun control.  Beyond the simple meaning of the verb to deny, there is the expression ‘in denial’ which has a more particular meaning, which could be paraphrased as in a state of blind stupidity involving the denial of what all rational people know to be a fact.  Perhaps it is this sense we should take the stance of the NRA.  Perhaps these people have never heard that admittedly rather vulgar joke – why does a dog lick its balls; because it can.  Why do some Americans buy huge quantities of lethal weapons and ammunition and then take the lives of so many innocent people – because they can – only in the USA do people enjoy such special freedom.  Daily Prompt: Deny

Magnetic attraction, babe magnet, these collocations are what mostly springs to mind but it is only opposite poles of  magnets which attract each other while like poles repel.  But magnets attract other objects apart from magnets so the attraction idea is the dominant one but maybe the repulsive aspect could be used creatively.  If you had two electro-magnets joined by their opposite poles but you could reverse the polarity – very Dr Who – would that send one of the magnets flying off like a missile?

What is an apprentice?  An unpaid skivvy exploited as many a modern intern, or a valued pupil on the first steps to becoming a master craftsman?  To one who remembers the old joke that an intellectual is someone who can listen to the William Tell Overture without thinking of the The Lone Ranger, this word will always bring to mind the Sorcerer Apprentice, but not just the music but the brilliant Disney cartoon from Fantasia.  I guess there are poor sad folk today who cannot hear the word without thinking of meritless tv show but I wonder if seeing the brilliant cartoon might make Trumpy McTrumparse think again before starting something he has no idea how to finish

Knitting or serial killers, which would you prefer. Knitting patterns can be fun even if you don’t knit. Did you know that Roger Moore did some modelling for knitting patterns.  This was brought to the TV audiences attention on a famous UK chat show.  If looks could kill.  The other major use I know for patterns is for the tracking down of serial killers – amazing how many of these there are on TV and always the detective is doing well when he starts to see the pattern.  TV serial killers always love patterns.

Hey, listen up!

This is my first blog post even if I thought it was my second as the first one has disappeared.  I suspect very few people will ever see this which gives me a great freedom but with freedom and choice come procrastination and dithering.  So I can think of this as not so much a post as a first draft of a post and then, if E Hemmingway is correct, it’s allowed/supposed to be shit.  Wait till you see the new improved second version.
